Attempts to Rid Yellow Fever
As mentioned before, medicine was extremely crude, and the people of Philadelphia did not know how to rid themselves of this disease. People would walk the crowded streets chewing garlic, drinking potions of herbs, and wearing bags of camphor as necklaces. You would even see others burying their beds, then digging them back up to try and combat the disease. Other citizens resorted to soaking sponges in vinegar and sticking them up their nose, washing their hair and clothes in it and even drinking the vinegar. Some men of the town would shoot off gun rounds and cannon balls to "clean" the air.
Despite the efforts, nothing the citizens tried seemed to work. Yellow Fever eventually disappeared after the first frost of the year, when the mesquitoes died off, therefore not being able to spread the fever.
